In “Toxic Masculinity in Petronius’ Satyrica”, Jordan D. G. Mitchell argues that Petronius subverted traditional social and literary norms in order to show their impracticality and absurdity when applied to ‘lived experience’. In the Satyrica, subordinate and marginalized individuals and groups of men engage in compensatory manhood acts and displays of exaggerated masculinity in order to emulate the most dominant form of masculinity in society, one result of which is the continual re-establishment of gender stereotypes as policing mechanisms and the re-affirmation of the subordination of women.
